We developed the Your Voice, Your Choice units to complement the Electoral Commission’s 2011 Kids Voting programme and to raise awareness among primary and secondary school students about New Zealand’s electoral processes.
Your Voice, Your Choice: Be Heard is aligned with Level 5 of The New Zealand Curriculum. The resource emphasises the importance of participating in New Zealand’s electoral system to students. It includes calls to action that involve students participating in voting activities.
Aligned with Level 4, Your Voice, Your Choice: Votes for Women provides a range of activities designed to develop students’ understanding of the suffragists’ achievement 120 years ago and to encourage voter participation today.
Your Voice, Your Choice: Have Your Say is a Level 3–4 civics education-based resource. It supports students to learn about their rights, duties and responsibilities in a democracy. The activities encourage students to have a say on the decisions that affect their lives now and in the future.
Your Voice, Your Choice: Tūranga Mua, Tūranga Tika is a secondary resource aligned with Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. It is designed for use in Māori-medium classrooms but can also be aligned with The New Zealand Curriculum social sciences learning area. The resource explores the participation of Māori in decision-making in different environments over time. The graphic organisers are provided in both te reo Māori and English.
All of the Your Voice, Your Choice teaching resources contain engaging activities, with links to a social inquiry approach and suggestions for formative assessment opportunities. The supplementary resources include a range of graphic organisers, as well as links to relevant resources and key background information on the topic.
