We’re proud members of the Commonwealth in New Zealand.
In fact, it’s probably the best “club” in the world: 53 countries, 2.3 billion people and a quarter of the world’s land mass… not to mention our commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law!
We’re even prouder to have published The Commonwealth Education Trust’s anthology, A River of Stories. It’s a brilliant educational resource, as well as a wonderful collection of beautifully illustrated books.
A River of Stories
A River of Stories is a four-volume set of stories and poems themed around the four elements – earth, fire, air, and water. The books are illustrated with vibrant, full-colour pictures by world-renowned children’s illustrators.
From describing the simple pleasures of the sound of the ocean to enchanting the reader with the exploits of kings and queens, each book has its own particular magic. Together they capture the sights, sounds and flavours of a global community.
It’s a must-have for the classroom.
An educational resource for teachers and students
These anthologies make a great resource for the classroom.
They invite students to engage with different perspectives from all over the world, and to consider some of the challenging issues that face our planet and its people.
The best part? We’ve developed an educational resource to go with it.
This resource is a collection of activities that show how the texts can be read, listened to, and viewed for many purposes; and how connections can be made between the different texts.
The resource includes:
- an overview explaining the parts of the resource
- themed activities that explore key concepts and cultural perspectives
- literacy activities for comprehension
- a readers’ theatre activity for students to share a poem or story with others
- audio recordings of a selection of texts
- video of contributors talking about their work
