Get Firewise and Māui-tinei-ahi have been popular and successful fire safety programmes in schools and kura kaupapa Māori since 2010. Lift Education has been involved in the design and production of both programmes since their inception.
The challenge
Fire and Emergency New Zealand wanted to provide additional training for firefighters that worked with the Get Firewise and Māui-tinei-ahi programmes. The training needed to include support around getting the programmes into schools, building relationships with schools, and delivering the programme with confidence.
The solution
We created a programme of support materials for firefighters offering these programmes, as well as ongoing support to teachers and whānau. We created an online course with videos that covered topics such as how schools would like to be engaged with, curriculum alignment, and support for delivering the programmes themselves. We filmed a range of firefighters presenting to classes to show ways to appropriately engage with Years 1 and 2 and capture their interest. We also revised a text-less big book with all new illustrations for firefighters to use with classes.
The course to support Māui-tinei-ahi included fully captioned videos delivered entirely in te reo Māori, including interviews with kaiako and the presentations in class.
