Using story to explore the connections between the food we eat and the economic systems that make that possible.
The challenge
The 2023 refreshed te ao tangata | social sciences curriculum content had dropped. The Ministry of Education were eager for teachers to embrace it, but they needed resources. A recent survey had also identified that there were few to no existing resources in the area of Ngā mahinga ohaoha | Economic activity.
How do we make an interesting resource about economic activity, linked to a brand-new curriculum document in a clear and supportive way?
The solution
We needed a universal experience to hook in students and connect to their real lives. Economic activity is at its heart just getting things that we need, and what does everybody need? Food.
The local dairy, a café, a supermarket, early Māori-Pākehā trading. We created stories for them all, and built them into immersive digital experiences in the Mā tō rourou, mā taku rourou | Our food economy Google Slides series of resources. Custom illustration and animation brings life to each story, and audio is provided for the Year 4–6 resource to support independent reading. Teacher-support material is provided in both Google Slides and PDF form.
