Familiar with Edith Amituanai?
She’s a prize-winning West Auckland photographer whose work is fascinating because of its extraordinary ordinariness. We published an article about her in the School Journal Level 4, November 2016, ‘The Great Ordinary: The Photographs of Edith Amituanai’.
Last year, Edith was invited to the Hawke’s Bay by the Hastings City Art Gallery to work with the students at Kimi Ora School in Flaxmere. Over five weeks, Edith taught the students about photography, and invited them into a conversation about what it means to take photos of people.
Then she gave the students her camera.
Students documented their lives: they took photos around school and at home; they took photos of their friends and families.
The result? #keeponkimiora, a selection of 50 of the photos, which was exhibited at the Hastings City Art Gallery. (And one of three finalists in a prestigious museum award.)
Kia kaha, Kimi Ora School! What an amazing learning adventure you have been on.
You can read all about the exhibition at The Pantograph Punch (and see more of the photos!), but if you’d like to learn more about Edith and her work with your students, check out the article in the School Journal. There are great teaching support materials, too!
